Doc's Corner
I was born in 1949, and like many Denver residents who moved to Colorado, I arrived in my active 30’s. While spending every available moment climbing mountains, skiing and biking, the thought of being 60 hadn’t entered my mind. But, to my surprise, I am now 61 and the years don’t seem to want to slow down! The ceaseless progression of time has brought new meaning to the phrase “aging in place”. Therefore the task of preparing my home so that my wife and I can “age in place” has taken a new prominent position on my to-do list. We may not know when we will need these changes, but the if is certain.
As a certified CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialist) building professional I can make the subtle, yet necessary, changes to my home, and yours. These alterations can include simple grab bars and better lighting to larger projects such as wheelchair friendly kitchens and bathrooms or elevator installations.
Many families are also finding themselves becoming caregivers for their aging relatives. Changes must be made in these homes as well, to ensure the safety of everyone in the house. In fact, many people opt for a complete addition that allows for the needs of the elder resident, such as wider doorways, step-in showers or wheelchair ramps.
We are changing, and our world must change with us. Luckily, we don’t have to figure it all out on our own.
Safe Aging,
